Functional Training

So, what is functional training?

Functional training defined is ‘training the body for the activities performed in daily life’. Functional training has its origins in rehabilitation where therapists and trainers select exercises for their clients to perform that closely mimic the movements those patients need to be able to perform at home, at work or for sport, in order to correct movement disorders or rehabilitate from injury or biomechanical limitations so they can complete goal specific activities, as quickly as possible. Here are some of the reasons why you’ll want to incorporate it into your routine.

  • Reduce Risk of Injury

  • Improve Performance

  • Increase Strength and Power

  • Improved Quality of Life

Mobility Training

While you may confuse mobility with flexibility or stretching, there’s more to it than that! Flexibility and stretching involve lengthening your muscles, while mobility takes it one step further. Mobility training optimizes movement and performance by increasing the range of motion within your joints and surrounding muscles. When you’re more mobile, you can train harder, recover faster, and perform better!

The benefits of mobility training are wide-ranging, helping with everything from pain and muscle soreness to form and strength.

Stability Training

Stability training is a very underestimated type of training that we all can benefit from whether for rehab, injury prevention or sports performance. We must always remember that Stability precedes strength and to be able to train stabilizers effectively it is all about timing and reflex reactivity.

Strength Training

Strength training is an exercise, or set of exercises, that helps the different muscles in your body to become stronger and more powerful. When a person has stronger muscles, they will have additional strength and stamina for daily activities. If a person’s muscular systems are strong it also means that the body is more likely to recover quickly from injuries, and it is sure to burn calories more efficiently and effectively by raising your metabolic rate.

Cardiovascular Conditioning

The dictionary definition for CV training is: ‘physical conditioning that exercises the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels’. In other words, when you do a cardio session, you’re giving your heart, lungs and circulatory system - in addition to any other muscle groups that you use - a good workout. Cardio exercise is extremely important because this system is effectively your body’s engine - and without a strong engine you’ll be going nowhere, no matter how good your bodywork is!

Nutritional Guidance

You cannot out train a bad diet. No matter if you train for sport, weight loss or general fitness, getting proper nutrients for the body is paramount.

Establishing proper nutrition habits is essential in keeping current and future generations of Americans healthy across the lifespan. People with healthy eating patterns live longer and are at lower risk for serious health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and autoimmune disorders. For people with chronic diseases, healthy eating can help manage these conditions and prevent complications.
